First of all, THANK YOU. I appreciate you subscribing to jacobwritescode.com. I really enjoy writing, and you subscribing to that writing really warms my heart.
Second, what the heck happened to jacobwritescode.com? 😂 I realized there are so many other things I want to write about — faith, leadership, fatherhood, etc. — and those don’t really belong on a “code-focused” blog. So, while I’ll continue to write about engineering topics, you’ll find even more about all the wanderings of my mind on mrjaketomlinson.com.
Third, what the heck is this email about? To stay consistent in my writing and let you know about them, I’ll be starting these regular newsletters. I hope I can provide you with some value, no matter which area of my writing you find most interesting.
📝 In Case You Missed It…
Python dataclasses have been around for a while now, but I still see examples of projects using dictionaries that get out of control when a dataclass would help immensely.
Schema evolution can be tough to deal with, but it doesn’t have to be! Get the pattern down for your business needs, and you’ll be off to the races.
A good acronym can help you remember a lot of information. So it is with GOSPEL.
📚 What I’m Consuming
Story of a Soul: The Autobiography of the Little Flower, St. Therese of Lisieux (book). I imagine it’s going to take me a while to get through this one. It’s rich with wisdom.
Running 1:1s for Engineers by Can Duruk (article). I’ve read this one a couple of times and came back to it recently. It’s extremely practical for managers and engineers who want more productive 1-on-1s.
Vihn Giang on the four types of communicators (video). Not everyone communicates the same way as I do, and I’d be wise to remember it. Vihn does a great job explaining communication styles and how to communicate with people who aren’t like you.
Till next time,
